The Categories of Help Offered at the Center Include:
Information & Referral:
The Botetourt Resource Center answers approximately 1,000 calls a year for information and assistance. Calls can include information on renter’s rights, home health services, child care, education resources, where to find classes on various topics, how to fill out public benefit forms, financial assistance, clothes, food, etc.
If a family or individual needs to be connected to a particular agency or service program, the BRC can be the referring agency. Examples of referrals may be to counseling services (Family Service of Roanoke Valley), legal aid (Legal Aid Society of the Roanoke Valley), help with a disability (Blue Ridge Independent Living Center), help with substance or physical abuse (Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare), homeless shelters, public benefits (Botetourt Social Services, Social Security Administration) transportation (Veterans Administration, Medicaid, Botetourt Parks and Recreation/LOA, etc.), for glasses, hearing aids (Lion’s Club), children’s shoes (Buchanan Presbyterian Church), etc.
Case Management and Advocacy:
Families and individuals are helped with budgeting issues, clothing, food, crisis response (a bill, loss from a fire, etc.) transportation, bill negotiation, filing public benefits, Medicare paperwork, birth certificates, health issues, housing issues, medical assistance (glasses, dental, hearing aids, etc).
Specialized Services Provided by the BRC through Partnerships and Collaborations:
* Outreach - Public speaking, agency trainings/presentations, partnerships, etc…)
* BRC Interfaith Crisis Fund - providing county-wide crisis assistance and referred to and supported by 25+ churches, Social Services, etc.
* BRC County-wide recycling network- collecting donated home items, appliances, clothes, furniture, medical equipment, toys, etc.
* BRC Senior Co-Payment Prescription Assistance and Senior Dental Care Project
* BRC Food Pantry (by appointment only)
* BRC Clothes Closet (by appointment only)
* BRC Small Home Repair and Weatherization Program for Seniors
* BRC Free firewood Program (wood supplied and delivered by Mill Creek Baptist Church Volunteers)
* BRC Recreation Programs for Seniors
* BRC Medical Equipment Loan Program
* Facilitation of community adoptions of families for Thanksgiving and Christmas
